YWCA Women’s Equity Day Celebration Rally
Anna Eleanor Roosevelt and KMOV’s Vickie Newton Headline
An All-White Attire and Hat Event
Anna Eleanor Roosevelt, granddaughter of former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt, will headline a YWCA Women’s Equity Day Celebration Rally to commemorate the 90th anniversary of the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that granted women the right to vote. Additionally, the East St. Louis Senior High Jazz Combo will provide entertainment and Emmy-award winning KMOV-TV News Anchor Vickie Newton will offer a “call to action.” The celebration is from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., on Aug. 26, at the YWCA Phyllis Wheatley Heritage Center, located at 2711 Locust St., in midtown St. Louis. The League of Women Voters of St. Louis, an event cosponsor, will offer voter registration at the event.

BACK TO TOP “I Am Woman” Poetry Slam
A 19th Amendment Celebration
YWCA is hosting an “I Am Woman” poetry slam from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Aug. 13. The slam is one of two pre-Equity Day Rally Celebration events to be held in observance of the 90th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution that granted women the right to vote. The poetry slam is free and open to all poets and to literary expressions given by those ages 16 and older. It will be held at the Phyllis Wheatley Heritage Center, at 2711 Locust St. in midtown St. Louis. Presenters are invited to pre-register online and all attendees should RSVP at www.ywcastlouis.org

BACK TO TOP “Iron Jawed Angels” Suffrage Movement Panel Discussion
“So Reel” Speaker’s Series
The next YWCA So Reel Racial Justice Speaker’s Series presentation will be devoted to “Iron Jawed Angels,” a movie starring Hilary Swank and Anjelica Huston about the American suffragist movement, beginning at 5:30 p.m. on Aug. 19. Portions of the movie will be shown prior to a panel discussion on the suffragist movement, how race impacted the women’s voting rights movement and women’s current social, business and political standings will be examined.
So Reel is held monthly at the Phyllis Wheatley Heritage Center, 2711 Locust St., in midtown St. Louis. It is free and encourages open and constructive dialogue. Academy of Leaders are Invited to Mark 30th Luncheon
YWCA has selected two of its prominent women business leaders on the organization’s board of directors to lead the 30th Leader Luncheon that recognizes the contributions of women in the workplace and the community. Jane Wulf, chief administrative officer for Scottrade, Inc., has been named chairwoman and Ann B. Prenatt, vice chancellor for human resources for Washington University in St. Louis, is co-chairwoman.

Young Women Professionals Are Invited
YWCA Metro St. Louis is seeking to engage young women professionals, between the ages of 22 to 35, by establishing a YWCA Young Ambassadors membership organization. An initial orientation held on June 28, was attended by more than 40 potential members at the Phyllis Wheatley Heritage Center. The new organization will support the YWCA mission to eliminate racism and empower women. The YWCA St. Louis Head Start/Early Head Start program will host a series of Back-To-School Fairs to enroll new and returning children for the upcoming school year. The fairs will be held through August 20, between 9 a.m.-3 p.m., at Head Start centers for both half-day and full-day programs.

BACK TO TOP Challenges Unlimited Hosts Open House
Program Serves Adults with Developmental Disabilities
“This program is a blessing from God,” says Nina Murphy, a parent who gave an impromptu testimonial about the benefits of Challenges Unlimited during its Open House on Sat., July 24, at the Phyllis Wheatley Heritage Center. “This is allowing parents, like me, to work,” she continued. Murphy was among the more than 60 people in attendance who were current or future program participants, family members, funders and program supporters.
Challenges Unlimited, a program for adults with developmental disabilities, is designed to enhance the quality of life and independence of males and females, ages 21 and older, with developmental disabilities from St. Louis City and County. It is offered year-round to promote self-reliance, self-advocacy and community integration for increasing independence in the home, on the job and in the community. Derek Murphy, one of the more than 80 participants, has been in the program for a year. “I can see how he’s grown and he’s become so independent,” says the proud mother. The Head Start Back-To-School Fairs come in time as the YWCA launches an expansion of the Head Start section of its Web site. The expanded area has many new features that will showcase why Head Start is the best in early childhood education. It will allow parents and others to virtually experience Head Start and includes center locations, enrollment requirements, photos, volunteer information, fun facts and tips just for parents.
